Minions: The Rise of Gru

The Rise of Gru is now playing in theatres, however, due to a recent trend on TikTok, several theatres have instituted a dress code that prohibits groups of young people wearing suits from entering the theatres.

The so-called “Gentleminions” craze has lately gone widespread on social media. This trend involves young people dressing up in suits and attending screenings of the newest Despicable Me movie in big groups while also mimicking the famous hand motion used by the supervillain Gru (via BBC News).

The BBC has reported that some of these groups have been accused of disruptive behavior during the screenings, including making noise and hurling items. Some of these films have accumulated millions of views in the few days following the film’s release.

According to the BBC, a spokeswoman for Odeon stated that the company has been forced to limit entry in some instances due to a small number of events that occurred in its theatres over the weekend.

In the meantime, a movie theatre in Cornwall posted a sign saying that “unaccompanied children wearing suits” would no longer be admitted, and a movie theatre in Guernsey canceled further screenings of the movie after Guernsey police confirmed that incidents at the theatre had been reported. Both of these theatres are located in the Channel Island of Guernsey (via BBC).

The Vue theatre operator stated that it was still inviting all customers to attend the film, which throughout the opening weekend had been “extremely popular.”

The animated film Minions: The Rise of Gru is the fifth installment in the Despicable Me film franchise and serves as both a sequel to the 2015 spin-off film Minions and a prequel to the film Despicable Me, which was released in 2010.
