Following Pakistan’s disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2024, former captain Shahid Afridi addressed speculation about potential changes in the national team lineup. He emphasized the need for a more measured approach.
“We’ve heard rumors suggesting dropping eight to nine players from the team, but that’s not feasible,” Afridi commented. “Such changes can only happen if there are capable replacements ready. Do we have anyone who can match Babar or Rizwan? These discussions require a strong reserve.”
Afridi urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to recognize performers in domestic cricket. He proposed that underperforming players should return to domestic cricket to rediscover form.
He highlighted the contributions of Salman Agha, Saud Shakeel, Sahibzada Farhan, and Mohammad Ali, stressing the importance of considering year-round performances over short-term outcomes.
“We must respect our domestic players who compete throughout the year and deliver outstanding performances. Neglecting their efforts and selecting players based on just a few matches is unfair,” he asserted.

Emphasizing consistency and fitness, Afridi stated, “Current players like Azam Khan or Saim Ayub should be instructed to play domestic cricket continuously for two years and maintain their fitness.
The selection committee needs to ensure that players meet the required standards to represent Pakistan.”
Meanwhile, rain in Lauderhill, Florida, prevented any cricket from being played, resulting in the US and Ireland each receiving one point. This advancement allowed the US to reach the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup from Group A, marking a historic achievement in their inaugural World Cup appearance.
