United’s upper management, notably manager Erik ten Hag, decided to punish Ronaldo for his outburst against Tottenham by benching him for the game against Chelsea three days later.

After refusing to come on as a substitute in the waning moments of the Spurs game and then rushing down the tunnel and out of the stadium before the final whistle blew, Ronaldo was also banned from the training field.

Ronaldo said he was wrong, but he thought his suspension was excessive and part of United’s plan to see how long he could take it. I think it was a tactic from the club for me to respond that way,” Ronaldo claimed in his explosive interview with Piers Morgan on Talk TV.

Many people have advocated for United to sever connections with Ronaldo, a five-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, after his outburst. Despite the uproar, Ronaldo said the moment that best captured the scenario was when he told his eldest son, Cristiano Jr., why he wasn’t playing.
