Many predicted that Argentina, led by Lionel Messi and their 48-place ranking advantage, would easily dispatch of Saudi Arabia. Argentina is now rated third in the world, has gone unbeaten in three years, and is among the favourites to win the 2022 event.

Much of the buildup to the game centred on Messi, one of the sport’s all-time greats who is, presumably, taking part in his final World Cup.

According to Gracenote, before the United States’ win against England in 1950, no team had a lower probability of winning the World Cup.

The Green Falcons are now ranked first, replacing Saudi Arabia, whose chances of winning Tuesday’s game were only 8.7 percent.
