Gracenote calls Argentina’s 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia greatest World Cup upset

  • Gracenote claims Argentina’s 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia was the biggest upset in World Cup history.
  • The Green Falcons are now ranked first, replacing Saudi Arabia.
  • La Albiceleste have gone unbeaten in three years and are favourites to win 2022 World Cup.

In 1978 and 1986, Argentina won the World Cup, but at Qatar 2022, La Albiceleste made history in a different way.

Gracenote, a company that compiles information about sports, claims that Argentina’s 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in Group C was the biggest upset in World Cup history.

Many predicted that Argentina, led by Lionel Messi and their 48-place ranking advantage, would easily dispatch of Saudi Arabia. Argentina is now rated third in the world, has gone unbeaten in three years, and is among the favourites to win the 2022 event.

Much of the buildup to the game centred on Messi, one of the sport’s all-time greats who is, presumably, taking part in his final World Cup.

The Argentina captain netted a penalty early on to put his team up, but goals from Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al Dawsari in the second half flipped the game on its head.

The unbelievable long-range goal scored by Al Dawsari and his acrobatic celebration thereafter will go down as one of the most memorable moments of this World Cup and, in time, of any World Cup.
According to Gracenote, before the United States’ win against England in 1950, no team had a lower probability of winning the World Cup.

The Green Falcons are now ranked first, replacing Saudi Arabia, whose chances of winning Tuesday’s game were only 8.7 percent.
