Australia and England have both received penalties and lost two points in the World Test Championship due to slow over rates during the first Ashes Test.

Both teams were found to be two overs behind their target, even after accounting for the time allowances.

As a consequence, all 22 players were fined 40% of their match fees, which amounts to approximately £6,000 per player for the English team.

Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, and England’s captain, Ben Stokes, accepted the sanctions, eliminating the need for formal hearings.

Australia prepared for the Ashes by defeating India in the second World Test Championship final, making them the winners of the 2021-23 cycle.

The exciting Ashes opener at Edgbaston marked the beginning of the new cycle. However, Australia’s victory, which initially earned them 12 points, has now been reduced to 10, while England’s points stand at minus two.
