Portugal advanced to the round of 16 in the World Cup thanks to a 2-0 win over Uruguay thanks to a brace from Bruno Fernandes.

On Monday, Portugal dominated possession but couldn’t score until the 54th minute, when Manchester United midfielder Fernandes’ cross found the back of the net.

When the ball appeared to hit Ronaldo on the head, the Portuguese forward celebrated the goal as his own. However, FIFA later determined that it had actually been scored by Fernandes.

In the 72nd minute, Uruguay substituted Maximiliano Gomez for Edinson Cavani and Darwin Nunez for veteran attacker Luis Suarez.

Gomez rang the post soon after entering the game, and Suarez won a free kick with some acrobatics, but Uruguay was unable to capitalise.

In stoppage time, Portugal were awarded a penalty after a video assistant referee ruled that Jose Maria Gimenez had handled the ball while on the ground after Fernandes had knocked it past him.

Portugal advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to a penalty kick goal by Fernandes. The struggling Uruguayans have a shot at making the playoffs if they can overcome Ghana on Friday and Portugal wins or draws against South Korea.
