Max Verstappen breaks Formula One single-season record for victories
  • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen sets new record for most victories in a season.
  • He finishes 15.186 seconds ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
  • Red Bull also win constructors’ championship with three rounds to spare.

Max Verstappen, a two-time defending Formula One world champion driving for Red Bull, won the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday to set a new record for most victories in a season (14) and most points gained (100).

Starting from pole position, the Dutch driver took the checkered flag 15.186 seconds ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez after stopping on lap 26 of 71 to switch from soft to medium tyres.

Verstappen, who won his second championship on October 9 in Japan and had a trouble-free day, said, “It’s been a wonderful year so far, we are absolutely enjoying it and we’ll try to push for more.”

After a race that was light on thrills and entirely about tyre strategy, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez finished third in front of his cheering home fans.

This was Verstappen’s fourth victory in Mexico, and the podium’s make-up was identical to that of 2017.

He tied German champions Michael Schumacher (2004) and Sebastian Vettel (2013) with a win last weekend in Austin, Texas, giving all three drivers 13 for the season.

In contrast, the 2022 season will feature 22 races, up from 19 in 2013 and 18 in 2004.

In addition, Verstappen scored 416 points, 136 more than Perez (now in second place) and three more than Hamilton’s 2018 record.

Additionally, Red Bull won the constructors’ championship with three rounds to spare with their ninth consecutive victory in Texas and 16th overall from 20 races.

Frustrated by Mercedes’ lack of pace, George Russell was fourth overall but set the fastest lap, passing both Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc in their Ferraris.

Due to a collision in the middle of the race, Daniel Ricciardo finished seventh for McLaren, behind Esteban Ocon of Alpine, Lando Norris in the second McLaren, and Valtteri Bottas of Alfa Romeo.
