Stranger Things surpasses one billion hours of global viewership

On July 1, when the final two episodes of the season were released, the program officially surpassed one billion hours of global viewership, as measured by the streamer’s internal measurement. It’s just the second show of any language to reach a billion hours of viewership and the first in English.

Stranger Things, now in its fourth season, has joined a select group of Netflix originals.

In its first 28 days of release, both portions of Stranger Things 4 have been watched for a total of 1.15 billion hours. Eight and nine accounted for little under 221 million hours of the 301.28 million hours worldwide for the week of June 27-July 3. The first seven episodes scored 930.32 million hours for their first 28 days. (When a season is broken up into two parts, as was the case with Stranger Things and Ozark earlier this year, Netflix only counts the time spent watching the second set of episodes toward the 28-day total.)

Only Squid Game (1.65 billion hours) has more viewing time than any other Netflix original in its first 28 days. With almost three weeks to go, Stranger Things has a good chance of catching up to or possibly surpassing, the Korean smash in terms of total viewers.

Even though they were only accessible for three days, the last two episodes of Stranger Things accounted for over three quarters (73%) of the season four viewership last week. The first three seasons have also remained in the top 10 most-watched titles in the English language on Netflix for the past month and a half.

Netflix’s measures show that Season 4 had the greatest launch weekend for a Netflix series ever, and Nielsen’s best weekly watching count in the United States since the firm began its weekly streaming rankings has been achieved in Season 4.
