Lionel Messi scored the opening goal in Argentina’s 2-0 World Cup win over Mexico at Lusail Stadium.

In the wake of Poland’s 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia earlier on Saturday, Argentina needed to win their match against Mexico or be eliminated from the tournament after two games.

As a result of Messi’s long-range opener (after 64 minutes) and Enzo Fernandez’s equally outstanding late goal, Argentina were able to put their shocking 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in the rearview mirror.

Group C leaders Poland, who Lionel Scaloni’s side will play in their final game, and the Mexicans sit at the bottom of the standings with just one point each.

After their opening setback, Argentina made five substitutions, three of them in defense, and still managed to muster up nothing of note in the first half.

With that goal, Messi tied the great Diego Maradona with eight World Cup goals for Argentina, and they later added a second through substitute Fernandez. Benfica’s midfielder took a Messi short corner pass and curled the ball past Ochoa with three minutes left.
